We are accepting online applications for the position of Patent Counsel located in Houston, Texas through July 29, 2012 at 11:59 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time). The Patent Counsel provides intellectual property legal services to clients primarily in the mechanical and chemical engineering arts, with particular focus on drilling and production technologies, and secondary focus on the electromechanical arts. Position Details: Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to: Preparing and prosecuting U.S. and foreign patent applications. Conducting Freedom to Operate reviews of 3rd party patents. Drafting and negotiating complex licenses and technology agreements. Assessing claims involving intellectual property rights by and against 3rd parties. Advising clients in the development and implementation of intellectual property protection strategies to support the needs of individual business units. Required Qualifications: Juris Doctorate and undergraduate or graduate degree in applicable engineering or science, preferably in mechanical or chemical engineering. Candidates with electrical engineering backgrounds also will be considered. Admission to practice before U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and admission to at least one State or District of Columbia Bar. Skill in drafting patent applications and familiarity with U.S. and Foreign Patent Practice especially in the area of drilling and production technologies. Skill in evaluating third party patents, performing Freedom to Operate studies, and drafting Freedom to Operate opinions. Able to implement and monitor Intellectual Property Strategies to support business needs and make changes to such strategies as needed. Able to assess third party claims and advocate the company’s positions under intellectual property rights of the company and third parties. Able to draft and negotiate complex technology agreements. Preferred Qualifications: Undergraduate and/or graduate degree in applicable technical areas. A minimum of 7 years experience in intellectual property law, including preparation and prosecution of U.S. patent applications in applicable technology fields.
